Step-by-step submission guide
How to Submit Work to Magazines
A practical guide to choosing a publication, preparing your manuscript and sending poetry, fiction, essays or visual work to magazines.
1. Find the right publication
Read recent issues and compare each magazine’s subject, tone and accepted formats before submitting. An open call is useful only when your work fits the editorial direction.
- Review recent issues.
- Check deadlines and accepted genres.
- Confirm the simultaneous-submission policy.
2. Prepare a clean file
Follow the requested file format, use a readable layout and name the document clearly. Include the work title, your name and the contact details requested by the publication.
3. Write a concise cover note
Introduce yourself briefly and list the work you are submitting. Avoid long explanations unless the editor specifically requests them.
4. Respect the response window
Wait for the stated review period before following up. If the work is accepted elsewhere, promptly notify other publications when simultaneous submissions are allowed.
